Kurt Rivera

Kurt Rivera joined Eyewitness News in June, 2004 anchoring the 6pm & 11pm newscasts, as well as the 10 pm newscast on sister station, FOX 58.

He began his career in 1987 as a news photographer at KESQ-TV (ABC) in Palm Springs, CA. A year later, he became a reporter for KERO-TV (CBS) in Bakersfield, CA. and worked there until 1993. That same year, Kurt was hired as a morning news reporter at FOX-owned WFLD-TV in Chicago. At that time, it was the first three-hour long morning newscast in the country.

In 1994, he moved on to be morning news reporter for five years at WXYZ-TV (ABC) in Detroit. In 1999, he decided to move back to Bakersfield to be closer to family. His return included his first full-time anchoring position for the morning news at KGET-TV (NBC) where he worked for four years.

During his career, Kurt has covered everything from floods in St. Louis, snow and ice storms in Chicago, tornadoes in Detroit to plane disasters in Ohio and Long Island, NY. He has interviewed everyone from Michael Jordan to Rosa Parks to Dr. Jack Kevorkian. One of Kurt’s proudest career achievements includes following a group of doctors to Colombia in 1997. The "Healing the Children" physicians volunteered their time to offer poor patients operations to repair facial deformities. His five-part series became a half-hour documentary and gained critical acclaim in the Detroit Free Press newspaper.

Kurt is the proud recipient of several awards, including a 2006 National & Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Best News Series, a 2005 Regional Murrow Award for Investigative Reporting, seven Emmy nominations including a winner for breaking news coverage in Detroit. He won an Associated Press award for "Best Individual Reporting" in Michigan. Kurt has also won nine Radio/Television News Association (RTNA) Golden Mikes, including five for best investigative, consumer and news series reporting, among other awards.

A graduate with honors from San Francisco State University, Kurt is also a huge sports fan and self-proclaimed "Parrothead" who enjoys the music of Jimmy Buffett. Kurt lives in Bakersfield with his wife and three young children.
