10/18/07 Bette Newton - Making Music

One Taft teacher is hitting a high note with her students.

This class went bananas for Bette Newton of Taft Primary School after she was awarded a $1,000 dollar check.

Bette Newton, Taft Primary School, "Oh my gosh I'm so surprised".

Bette created an after school guitar program to follow one that had previously existed at the school, but that program had stopped, But her's will now live on.

Creating quite the opportunity for students to play the guitar. " I just think it rounds out a child's educational experience."

The $1,000 dollar grant will help purchase new guitar strings for the existing guitars and will also help purchase new music books and music materials for students to use in the after school program.

For one student Blake DeRevere a 3rd grade student, music has become a favorite activity. But learning guitar wasn't always easy for this third grader. "After you do it for a while you get use to it and then you get really good at it."

But as many musicians say, practice makes perfect. And the grant has been music to Ms. Newton's ears. "Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to keep the music alive in our school. it's going to provide great experience for these children that they would not have had otherwise. "

Miss Newton says she designed the program because she felt the arts have been slightly forgotten about throughout time in schools and she hopes it will get more students involved in music throughout their entire school careers.

Making musical memories that will last a lifetime, One Classroom at a Time.
