One Classroom01/24/08 Libby Tracy - Upper Body Strength
One class in Bakersfield got quite the workout today.
PE class just got a workout of it's own, PE teacher Libby Tracy designed a core and upper body strengthening program to help build strong students throughout his class. Libby Tracy, "Most of them could not even do 10 push ups...now they can do 40...I have seen a big gain!" Tracy says at least 70 % of his male students can't do pull ups and has noticed they have a lack of core strength. "A lot of kids are just sitting around watching tv. Their not doing things like exercising to condition their masses." The grant will purchase exercise equipment including exercise balls, lateral plyoboxes and high powered plyometrics. Tracy, "The goal is to get students to be able to do at least 3 pull-ups, .60 sit-ups, and 10- 15 push ups by the end of the year." Students say they're happy the grant will help them build upper body strength. Ashley Harris, 8th Grade Student, "It's important to be active because you will live longer". Dereke Ellis, 7th Grade Student, "We get more equipment and we can get better in shape" And every time students do 50 push ups, he returns the favor with a flip. Tracy, "I would like to thank all the sponsors for giving us the 1000 dollars... our kids appreciate it and we will put it to good use." Because the school has such a small population, Mr. Tracy says the grant will help him target every student on campus. Changing learners into strong students, One Classroom at a Time. |
