02/20/08 Rob Whitbey - Rebuild a Science Garden

Some students in Delano are not afraid to get their hands dirty. and now they will be doing just that, all while learning about the environment.

Rob Whitbey, "Diversity means different...bio means life..."

Science teacher Rob Whitbey knows how to be different in the classroom especially when teaching his students the importance of science.

Our newest $1,000 dollar grant winner designed a program to help rebuild a science garden at Delano High School.

Rob Whitbey, "The science garden has been in place for over 40 years and in fact it was first dedicated in April of 1964, but in the last ten years it has fallen into disrepair."

The money will repair a pond inside the garden where they can add native fish and plants.

Whitbey says the money will help students learn more about the importance of the environment. "In science we like to get as much hands on experience as possible, it really amplifies learning with the students and increases their comprehension."

Ons student says it helps her explore new things, "Its a good feeling to be outside because you get to learn about rocks,.everything out there, things you never would have thought."

Whitbey, "We'll have microscopic work where they can look at samples, but also macroscopic work where they can go look at the trees and compare the biodiversity."

And while this grant will help fix this garden in need, students say it will now become the Garden of Green.

Whitbey, "Thanks for the 1,000 grant, We can't wait to get our hands dirty in the garden."

Changing learners into hands on scientists, One Classroom at a Time.

There are over 600 biology students that will benefit from the garden but about 400 chemistry and 400 physical science students will also get to learn from this scenic space.
