Kern County looks to expand Jessica's Law
A new ordinance will be introduced to the Board of Supervisors which will expand Jessica's Law here in the county to limit where sex offenders can live. 29 Eyewitness news recently discovered the El Don Motel at 800 South Union Ave would be housing around 15 paroled sex offenders.
Several tip line callers told us they were concerned about a licensed day care center within 900 feet of the hotel and just 400 feet from another motel housing sex offenders. So we put a call into the Office of Senator George Runner of Lancaster who authored Jessica's Law and found out that there was nothing in the law that prevented sex offenders from living near any facility other than a school or a park. However, that law could be expanded by a county supervisor. Supervisor Michael Rubio tells us that at next Tuesday's meeting he will introduce a new ordinance that will include all facilities that involve children, including day cares, after school programs and bus stops. Supervisor Rubio added that he's looking into the grandfather rule being dismissed in these cases, because it is a public safety issue. We will continue to follow this story and let you know what happens. |
