Injured soldier receives heroes welcome homeAmity Addrisi, Reporting
More than one hundred people including community members, veterans, National Guardsmen, Bakersfield Police and the Kern County Sheriff Deputy's were waiting at Meadows Field for Corporal Wesley Barrientos, a soldier injured in Iraq.
The 23-year old lost both his legs when his Humvee was hit by a roadside bomb in Iraq last December. Since the accident he has been recovering at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. On Wednesday, he returned home for the first time since he was injured. His sister says she was brought to tears when she saw her brother walk through the airport Wednesday afternoon. Barrientos, who received prosthetic legs only 2 weeks ago, speaks humbly about serving his country, saying he feels he was "Just doing his job." Barrientos tells 29-Eyewitness News that his doctors say he is doing very well with his recovery and says he plans to be running again in less than 3 months. |
