Investigations
Centennial Plaza is getting a face lift
After a 29 Eyewitness News Investigation city crews were in downtown Bakersfield Tuesday replacing damaged bricks.
As we were first to show you many of the bricks bought by members of the community are now broken or cracked and Bakersfield residents called our tip line asking us to investigate. The bricks and tiles were sold in the mid 90's by the Centennial Foundation a private group which raised money to help fund construction costs of Centennial Plaza with bricks costing between $100 and $500 dollars. When our story first aired, the city said there was never a guarantee the bricks would remain in place forever. However the city manager's office later said they would be replacing worn bricks that created a hazard to people walking and that those bricks could be engraved for those wanting to pay for a replacement. |
