Sharpton not investigating officer involved shooting

The investigation into a deadly shooting involving Bakersfield Police continues, but reports have surfaced that the Reverend Al Sharpton is calling for an independent look into the death. Eyewitness News worked the phones on Wednesday and uncovered what is true and not true.

When we heard another TV station report that civil rights leader Al Sharpton wanted to get involved in this case, we began trying to confirm it for ourselves. But when we called Sharpton's office in New York, they told us that our conversation was the first they heard of the shooting.

Police say 36-year-old Leon Anderson shot at them when they tried to stop him in the 900 block of Feliz Drive Saturday night. Officer Dennis Eddy was shot in the leg and chest, a bullet proof vest helped save his life. Anderson was shot several times and died at the scene. People in the neighborhood were visibly upset. Both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation. Since the shooting, officers have received death threats, and community leaders are working with police to keep the peace.

So what is true about Sharpton's involvement? As of now he has not asked for an independent examination of Anderson's body, in fact his office says he didn't even know about it. After we called they say it's the type of situation he might consider looking into. We'll follow up and let you know if he ever does.

Since this shooting happened in an area where Sheriff's deputies patrol, we wanted to know if that department was doing anything different in the wake of threats to police officers. When we called Sheriff Donny Youngblood, he told us that it is business as usual and deputies are keeping in contact with the community and they haven't had any reports of violence that are connected to this shooting.
