Parole department places sex offenders in local motelAmity Addrisi, Reporting
A tipline caller recently contacted 29-Eyewitness News over concerns that several sex offenders were living at a motel together. We contacted parole who tell us they know about it and they are involved in the process. 29-Eyewitness News reporter Amity Addrisi uncovered a unique new strategy at dealing with the problem of housing and tracking sex offenders.
Jessica's and Megan's law were passed to protect children from convicted and registered sex offenders. They prohibit them from living or hanging out near schools and parks, where children are. With those restrictions finding a place to put sex offenders is a constant problem. While our tipline caller wants them out of her neighborhood, our local parole department thinks they've come up with a solution to keeping a constant eye on sex offenders. The El Don motel at 800 South Union never had a very positive reputation neighbors say it was a hot spot for drugs and prostitution. Recently it got a renovation for new guests, registered sex offenders on parole. Dolores Calvillo lives in the area and contacted 29-Eyewitness News after hearing rumors about el Don's new residents. She says she's worried about fearing anything can happen. The parole department tells 29-Eyewitness News they have formed a sort of partnership with the hotels owners. John Bailey from the California Department of Corrections told us about the program saying, "There would be a man on site 24 hours a day to monitor all the people we place there that he would sign them in and out, he would log them in and out." 29-Eyewitness News went inside a sex offender's room who didn't want to appear on camera. The rooms are small but clean, and according to the parole department, very regulated. Bailey says all of his parole agents have keys to the rooms. According to parole 15 sex offenders will live at the El Don Motel, 11 have already moved in. Bailey says it's the first time this type of structure has been implemented and told us it will work better at keeping the public is safe from sex offenders. But our tipline caller, Calvillo isn't convinced, she says children often walk by the motel and says there is concern about the safety of developmentally disabled people living right next door to the El Don. According to Calvillo the owner of the Rosegarden Residential Living Facility has filed a complaint. But there's no law prohibiting sex offenders from living near this type of facility. The Parole Department maintains that public safety is their first concern. Bailey says this is one of many programs, including therapy and work training, they are doing to keep tabs on these sex offenders. It is important to note that the El Don is closed to the public. Calvillo also says she is concerned there is a West High School bus stop too close to the motel. The Parole Department says there are no stops within the area but we have a call into the Kern High School District to make sure. We will continue to check on the progress of the parole department and these motels. |
