Rough roads in Rexland Acres causing frustration among neighbors

Rough roads in Rexland Acres causing frustration among neighbors

Amity Addrisi, Reporting

A massive sewer project in Southeast Bakersfield has people in the area frustrated with what they think is a major back-up in construction. 29-Eyewitness News went to the county for answers and found out new information about the project.

A viewer called our Tipline concerned about bad road conditions throughout the entire Rexland Acres neighborhood. A few months ago the county began sewer construction in the area where several homes had been on failing septic systems. While homeowners are glad the sewer will flush out septic problems, they are frustrated by little communication from the county.

The Rexland Acres neighborhood is in Southeast Bakersfield. A large sewer project planned for the area called for the roads to be ripped up. Frustrating to residents who say it's been this way for months. They say the rough roads are hard on their cars and the dust kicked up from the unpaved roads is unbearable. Steve Milne is concerned about his grandmothers health. She has lived in Rexland Acres for almost 40 years, and Milne says she's been in and out of the hospital for breathing problems and worries the dust from the road is making her health worse.

29-Eyewitness News went to the county looking for answers. The Engineering Department says the project is wrapping up ahead of schedule, but paving the roads is the final step because they need to test the lines.

Still neighbors say the most frustrating part of the construction is the lack of communication from the county. They say they are left not knowing what's going on and when the roads will be fixed. The county's engineering department says while they realize it's inconvenient for residents they are working as fast as they can.

Once the project is complete it will be up to the people who live there to connect their homes to the new system. According to the county the project should be completed sometime in April. Again, the county says the roads will be patched after the lines are tested which will happen when the entire sewer is finished. When that happens, the county is looking into ways of helping home owners pay for the costly hook-up procedure but there is nothing set in stone at this point. We will keep following this story and bring you updates as they become available.
