Parents concerned over the handling of a school stabbing threatAmity Addrisi, Reporting
A school yard threat about one student stabbing another at a local school district prompts one child's parents to call 29-Eyewitness News looking for answers. As soon as we got the call on our tip-line about a little girl being threatened, and her parents felt nothing was being done, we tracked down the superintendent of the Fairfax District to make sense of it all. And while it's hard to distinguish real threats from childhood squabbles, the Superintendent says they take all threats seriously.
The incident happened Tuesday afternoon at Shirley Lane Elementary school. One little girl says another student threatened to get a knife and stab her during a fight. When her parents found out they say they were furious, saying the student who threatened their daughter was sent back to class. The parents went to the school looking for answers and after they say the felt they were getting nowhere, they filed a police report. The little girl's mom, Ruby Gonzales, says the Principal, Mrs. Castro, called them later that night and told them the student would be punished accordingly. But the Gonzales' believe if they hadn't gotten upset and contacted 29-Eyewitness News, nothing would have been done. In a meeting Friday morning with the Fairfax District Superintendent, Gonzales got some answers and requested to file a formal complaint. Gonzales tells us "She (the Superintendent) said that there would be a formal written letter like a write-up on the principal about it and go over things in the policies and the way it should have been done. She would make sure the principal speaks with my daughter and let her know about her open door policy." We tracked down District Superintendent Desiree Von Flue to talk about the issue. VonFlue says she cannot not confirm whether action was taken against the principal, Mrs. Castro, but did make this promise to parents. VonFlue says quote -our principal will reassure *all* students that anytime they have a concern about safety on campus that's our number one priority and that those issues will be addressed." We will of course keep following this situation and bring you any updates if necessary. |
