Dangerous intersection in Wasco in need of stoplight

Dangerous intersection in Wasco in need of stoplight

We first brought you the dangers of Highway 46 and Griffith last December after a little boy was hit by a car. Wasco city officials had hoped to get a stoplight installed in time for the school year, but school's been in session for nearly a month now, and still no stoplight.

We wanted to know why, so we went back to the intersection. Just by coincidence, an accident happened seconds after we started rolling our camera. A truck was going westbound on Highway 46, when it smashed into a red sedan heading north on Griffith. The truck sped out in front of a group of kids, walking home after school. The truck missed them by feet.

Employees of Thomas Jefferson Middle School, along with parents ran out to the scene after hearing the crash. Esmeralda Gonzales was one of them.

"It's a nightmare. We had a couple of parents thinking it was their child," said Esmeralda Gonzales. She's a parent, as well as the yard manager at the school

Sheriff's deputies say they see their fair share of accidents at the intersection, caused by speed and inattention.

"It's an uncontrolled intersection," explained Deputy Michael Whorf. "We could definitely use a stoplight at this intersection, I think." Whorf also said he believes a stoplight could have prevented today's accident.

The need is apparent. So why is there still no stoplight?

"We're at the point now," said Marty Jones, Wasco's director of public works. "We just have to get off the mark. That's done through Cal-trans and they're working diligently on that."

Jones says the money has been secured, and that Cal-trans sees the need, but yet, the project keeps getting pushed back.

"The potential for accidents for children is high everyday. I just don't know how long until it will get it done. We're doing all we can. There are so many entities. Sometimes you need a catalyst, and that may be elected officials to help get it started," said Jones.

But that catalyst, hopefully won't be another child hurt.
